On The Road to Healthy Skin
Hi Readers! Recently, I’ve been getting into researching skin care and finding the best regimen for myself. It can be a struggle to find the appropriate skin care products for many people. It certainly has been for me. Personally, I don’t have a problem with acne, but my skin fluctuates from being SUPER DRY and SUPER OILY on a daily basis, and I have many dark spots on my skin that I am trying to fade away. Oh, and don’t get me started on the dark circles under my eyes!
Over the past couple of months though, I have found a few products that work WONDERFULLY for me! Now, I know that everyone’s skin is different…so, instead of showing you guys entire skincare routine, I’m going to share a few essentials that everyone should use daily on their skin to have a healthy, radiant glow all 365 days a year! Also, I’ll share a few brands of skincare products that I’ve come to cherish as my holy grails.
1. SPF Moisturizer
SPF is a must! No matter what the weather is! The sun is still there and if the sun is there, that means that your skin is not protected! Generally, use a moisturizer with at least SPF 15 to keep your skin healthy and protected from those darn UV rays (and it helps prevents aging too!). Now, even oily skin needs moisturizer. But for oily skin, use something lighter like a lotion. If you have dry skin, go for something like a cream or a body butter. Oh and here is a secret for the ladies: use a tinted moisturizer instead of the heavy foundation and powder routine. The Laura Mercier brand even has tinted moisturizer with SPF! Can’t get better than that. Besides tinted moisturizer, I like to use Clean and Clear’s Morning Burst Morning Glow Moisturizer with SPF 15 (for morning), and Dual Action Essential Moisturizer (for night), or, Aveeno’s Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer, with SPF. These are on the less expensive end of the spectrum. For a higher priced product, I’ve found that Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer with SPF 30 is great!
Use a moisturizing cleanser if you have dry skin and a gel or foam cleanser if you have oily skin. Use cleanser once when you wake up, and before you go to sleep (especially you ladies!). Cleanser will remove dirt, excess oil and prevent blackheads. Also, it’s so important to use cleanser to remove make up EVERY NIGHT before you go to bed! It may seem like a hassle, but do you really want to let your skin suffer at the expense of the 2 minutes you didn’t take to wash your face? I recommend Olay’s Fresh Effects Shine, Shine Go Away Shine Minimizing Cleanser. I’ve been using this for my combination skin since June and I really like that It’s so effective for my skin. Another favorite of mine is Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple, which is a bit pricey…but well worth the price!
Exfoliators remove the dead skin cells that are left behind on your face without scratching at your face too much. Their job is to polish up your skin and remove the roughness. It’s important not to use a harsh and overly coarse exfoliator. My two favorites are Olay’s Fresh Effects Bead Me Up Exfoliating Cleanser and Origins’ Modern Friction. Both are gentle, without strong fragrances and both leave my skin hydrated, smooth and soft. Bonus points because the Origins exfoliator is all-natural!
4. Eye Cream
It is very important to have an eye cream separate from your normal moisturizer. While an eye cream’s purpose is to leave your skin hydrated, moisturizers made specifically for eyes are necessary because the skin around your eyes is extremely fragile and extra prone to dryness, and wrinkles. Using eye cream will also help reduce the darkness and puffiness by hydrating and brightening the skin. While you may think that eye cream isn’t necessary, it’s been said that you should start wearing it in your 20’s because it never hurts to be too careful about your face…it’s the only one you’ll ever have! I really like Korres Quercetin & Oak Anti-Aging Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream. It is natural and it doesn’t contain any parabens. It is a bit on the expensive side, however I’ve been using it for a couple of months now and I’ve found that it actually makes a difference.
Antioxidants help protect your skin from the sun, and they promote skin repair and regrowth. Also, they help fight against lines and wrinkles. The best part about these is that you don’t have to purchase another skin-care product, per se. Instead, you can eat natural antioxidants that taste delicious and are so healthy! Foods like blueberries, cranberries, pomegranates, red and black beans, apples and green tea have LOADS of antioxidants! So next time you’re feeling hungry, grab an apple or a handful of berries instead of the chips that are sitting in your pantry. Your skin will thank you!
I’m sure you’ve heard many times before that you should drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. It took me a while, but I finally got in the habit of carrying around a bottle of water with me everywhere I go. Now, I can’t leave my house without any! Drinking an adequate amount of water will flush out toxins that can harm your skin and in general, your body. It will also leave your skin so hydrated and looking fresh. For some flavored-fun, add lemon slice and basil in your water! It tastes crisp and delicious! You can even kill two birds with one stone: remember that green tea I mentioned earlier? Make some! H2O + antioxidants…I can’t think of anything better!
My last tip is to stay away from harsh products with strong scents and loads of chemicals. Stay as natural as you can because using the harsh products can ruin the chemical balance in your skin, causing your skin to become dependent on those products. If you decide to stop using them, your skin might retrograde to the same condition, or maybe even worse.
So there you have it…everything you need to keep your skin healthy, hydrated and happy. Get in the habit of using these products (or consuming them), and you’ll definitely notice a difference…a good kind. Even making just the antioxidants and water parts of your daily routine will improve your skin quality by a significant amount!
