Food Fridays: DIY Sangria
Hey Trim readers! It's Friday night and all that is on our minds is how we are going to refresh ourselves after a long hot day. Well there is no better way to start off a great Friday night than a pitcher of freshly made sangria! I know, as soon as you hear the word it makes your mouth water because it is that good. Everyone knows that this is the go-to drink of the summer when we all need something that will work against the heat and also get the party started. The recipe is simple and you'll be glad that this was your drink of choice to get the night started.
Okay, to get started you'll need a few fruity, sweet ingredients, and booze of course:
- 1 Bottle of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja, Zinfandel, Shiraz)
- 1 Lemon cut into wedges
- 1 Orange cut into wedges
- 1 Lime cut into wedges
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- Splash of orange juice or lemonade
- 2 Shots of gin or triple sec (optional)
- 1 Cup of raspberries or strawberries (may use thawed or frozen)
- 1 Small can of diced pineapples (with juice)
- 4 Cups ginger ale
First you need to slice all the fruit, preferably into wedges but whatever floats your boat is fine. Then, pour the bottle of wine into the pitcher, bowl or whichever way you're serving it. Remember that this is a chilled drink so you can either make the whole pitcher and store it overnight in the fridge for the next day or for an emergency drink, use chilled red wine or serve it over lots of ice! Next, squeeze all the fruit juice, except for the pineapples, into the wine (try not to get the seeds in!). After, you can toss all the fruit in along with the orange juice and gin. Remember, the gin is optional but if you like to add a bit more of a kick to your sangria then go for it. Right before serving, add ginger ale right before serving and throw on some berries for a fun, summer garnish!
This recipe is super easy and such a perfect summer drink. We also thought for our first Food Friday we would do something that everyone loves! If you don't love sangria because you've never tried, well you've run out of excuses because now you can make it yourself and it's the perfect night to try it!
