Trim Treats: A Bite of Bastille
Happy Bastille Day!
Today, July 14th, is Bastille Day or French Independence Day. The storming of the Bastille prison marked the beginning of the French Revolution, but also the freedom of the French people from their monarchy. In France, there are numerous celebrations including fireworks and parades.
Here in the US we can appreciate the holiday in another way: eating! (Who doesn’t love an excuse to try some new fare?). Whether you have a massive sweet tooth, or prefer salty and herby, I’ve found a treat just for you. Bon appétit!
Crêpes with Sugar and Lemon
Although Nutella is a popular topping, sugar and lemon is the traditional French way to dress up a crêpe, not to mention how refreshing it is for summer. After you’ve mastered your crêpe, just dust it with sugar and some freshly squeezed lemon juice.
I tried both granulated and powdered sugar sprinkled on these crêpes. I prefer the granulated because of the slight crunch. Plus, it stays put and doesn’t melt and disappear into the warm crêpe.
These sophisticated little beauts couldn’t be easier, or more yummy! If you have an extra minute, whip fresh cream and melt chocolate chips with cream into ganache. If not, squeeze some cream from a can and drizzle with bottled chocolate syrup. Or, make it into a profiterole with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in place of whipped cream for a chilled bite. Parfait each way!
Heat ½ cup water and ½ stick butter in a saucepan until boiling. Stir in ½ cup flour. Stir vigorously over low heat for about 1 minute, until it forms a ball. Remove from heat. Add 2 eggs and beat until smooth. Drop scant ¼ cup-fulls of dough 3 inches apart onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment. Bake at 400° for 35-40 min. Makes 6 puffs.
When cooled, carefully slice in half and fill one side with whipped cream. Top with the other half and drizzle with chocolate.
Baguette with Strawberries and Brie
Brie cheese may not be familiar to you, but it is actually really delicious! Creamy with a touch of tang, pair it with a crusty baguette and ruby-red strawberries for the quintessential French delight. Perfect for a snack or a light breakfast or lunch.
Eiffel Tower Cookie Sundae
This is a pretty magnifique-looking dessert. Invite out your inner artist to experiment with sugar wafer cookies and icing to build the perfect shape. Serve with a scoop of your favorite ice cream. Oh la la!
This is like the French version of pizza. The traditional version, called pissaladière, has anchovies and olives. I decided to skip those two for a more familiar, and tastier, dish. With sweet caramelized onions on a flaky crust, you won’t miss the fish!
Bring a bit of southern France and the Mediterranean to your own kitchen! This yummy salad is a breeze to throw together. For more protein and color, add some sliced hard-boiled eggs. This healthy plate is wonderful as a hearty side or by itself.
Quiche is one of those throw-in-whatever-you-have recipes, perfect for the broke college student. This one is still a straightforward creation, but it’s classier with French flavors. Oh, and there’s bacon. No arguments here!
This fancy sandwich is basically a grilled cheese with ham. A quick swap-in of a croissant and gruyere for white bread and American cheese slices bring it to such a fantastic new level, there’s no going back. Insanely decadent, with hot, oozing cheese, this jewel just might be the best thing you’ve ever tasted.
