As an avid YouTube nerd (See proof here), I’ve been familiar with all of the typical make-up tutorials, product reviews,  and lookbooks on the website and more importantly, the fantastically talented ladies that make it all happen. I personally have always been enthralled by the amazing lifestyles that these women have and enchanted by the remarkable looks that they are able to create. I’ve seen it all, know all of the “top” gurus and their followings but when I stumbled upon LaMadelynn’s channel, I knew I had found a gem in a sea of the regular.  She was original;  refreshingly unique. Her zeal for all things creative, sparked an inspiration in myself so I’m sure you can only imagine my excitement when I found out I would be able to get an inside look at her incredible world.

Trim:Tell us a little about yourself Maddie, what is your story?

MD:  Well, I’m an Army brat so I’m not really from anywhere per se, but we have lived all over the world and my favorite place has probably been Hawaii.  As for jobs, I work at the Apple store, I’m a substitute teacher, and I do YouTube on the side, all whilst being a full time student (yikes!).

Trim:  What made you decide to make your first Youtube Video?

MD:  I started really getting into YouTube my junior year of high school.  I started out watching beauty videos for the most part, then slowly digressed into the fashion realm of YouTube.   There weren’t very many U.S. fashion channels at the time and I was mostly watching UK fashion gurus.  From there I decided I wanted to start my own fashion/beauty channel in the U.S. Not only that, but I have a fascination with video editing.  Since middle school it’s been my go-to creative outlet.

Trim: Did you have an easy time getting your videos to be seen? What made you committed to continuing the channel?

MD:  Luckily it didn’t take long before people started finding my videos.  Everyone at the time was really getting into thrifting, so having a fashion channel then was a hub for creative people to get new fashion inspiration from.

Trim: Now that you have over 40,000 subscribers and hundreds of thousands of views you must feel very accomplished. How does it feel to be such a success story?

MD:  It’s pretty incredible and unreal! So many wonderful things have come from this and I’m so grateful… I couldn’t have asked for a more fun job.

Trim: Your channel focuses mostly on fashion and beauty, how long have you been interested in these topics and what do you love about them?

MD: I’ve always been interested in fashion, although I was a total tomboy when I was younger.  I would see boys’ outfits and try to recreate their ensembles (in the coolest way possible, of course).  I’m still into the whole androgynous look – I’ve never been the girly type.  As for beauty, that didn’t come until much later – probably late high school.  I was set on going to beauty school after high school, but decided to get my associates degree first.  Now I’m a senior in college and am totally happy with my decision.  Fashion and beauty are creative outlets to express ourselves and have fun with - it’s pretty incredible how inspiring these two can be.

Trim: What are some of your favorite stores and brands?

MD:: Shop Wasteland, Urban Outfitters, and Nasty Gal.

Trim: What is one fashion/beauty trend that you definitely see yourself drawn to in spring ’14?

MD: Bright orchid lip shades!

Trim:  What is one beauty product you cannot live without?

MD: Most definitely lipstick. I’m a total lipstick fiend and have a plethora in my bag at a time.  Not only that, but they double as a blush – which I too often forget before leaving the house!

Trim: Other than Youtube, what other things do you like to do in your spare time?

MD: I’ve recently discovered audiobooks and I don’t know what took me so long.  Since I’m so busy with work, school, and YouTube, finding time to read is nearly impossible.  So I’ve been listening to audiobooks in the car and it’s been incredibly relaxing and productive!  My current read is Doctor Sleep by Stephen King.

Trim: What are some of your favorite Youtube channels?

MD:: Currently obsessed with FunForLouis, Essiebutton, ClothesEncounters, and BeautyCrush.

Trim: What did your family and friends say when they first found out about your channel?

MD: My family has been supportive from the very beginning.  I remember us all getting excited when I hit 60 subscribers (haha!). I was actually pretty hesitant about telling my friends and they didn’t find out about it for a while… But they have been so incredibly supportive with giving me video ideas, helping me film, etc.  I’m so appreciative of having such encouraging, wonderful people in my life.

Trim: Who would you consider to be a role model or a big inspiration you?

MD:  I get inspiration from everywhere really – especially YouTube.  Jenn from ClothesEncounters is a huge one, but also bold, independent women in general such as Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Alexa Chung, Sophia Amoruso, etc.

Trim: Any life plans for the future?

MD:  In the next couple of years I should have my master’s degree and I’ll be teaching.  As for my YouTube channel, I hope it continues to grow and I’m able to express my creativity whole-heartedly.

Trim: Any random special skills/talents you care to share with us?

MD: I am the Mario Kart champ, seriously.

Trim:  What advice would you give any everyday person looking to start their own channel?

MD: It’s important to have good lighting and a quality camera.  Together these can make or break the aesthetics and appeal of a video.  Also, be sure to post frequently when first starting out – it’s easier to get recognized this way.  Once you’ve established yourself you can then begin posting once a week or so.  Lastly, interact with your viewers and have other forms of social media where they can reach you outside of YouTube.
