Netflix released season 2 of its hit series, Orange is the New Black, today, June 6th, 2014! The show is renowned for its visibility of LGBT people and People of Color in the media and has a fantastic cast.  Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon are returning for the second season to reprise their roles as Piper Chapman and Alex Vause.  Laverne Cox, who plays Sofia Burset in the series, has become a transgender icon and activist and was recently featured as the first trans woman on Time Magazine’s cover also appears in the new season.  The season gets released in full and is available to stream at any time through the Netflix web movie & television service.

Below is a quick recap of the first season in case you want to jump right in with your friends:

[SPOILERS BEGIN]

The series focuses on Piper Chapman, a newly engaged woman in the middle of starting a business with her best friend who receives notice that she will have to serve time in prison.  In a past relationship with a woman, she aided in the smuggling of drug money as a favor for her girlfriend at the time.  Her being just shy of passing up the statute of limitations results in her sentence.

Upon Piper’s arrival at the prison, she is shocked by how different life is and struggles to adapt.  She insults the chef’s food which results in her being starved out.  One thing leads to the next until she learns that her ex-girlfriend whom she held responsible for her sentence, Alex Vause, is also a prisoner at the same facility.  However, she eventually becomes friendly with Alex throughout the season and ends up struggling with her relationship with her fiancé as a result of their separation and his lack of trust.

Piper’s relationships with each of the prisoners changes throughout the season and she ends up being exposed for speaking badly about them to her fiancé at the beginning of her time there.  At the end of the last episode, she is pursued by a religious extremist, Tiffany ‘Pennsatucky’ Doggett, who is very vocal about her objection to lesbian activity.  Pennsatucky, dressed in an angel outfit, wields a cross and attacks Piper.  The scene ends with Piper on top of Pennsatucky, punching her repeatedly.

[SPOILERS END]

Although the main character in the series is Piper Chapman, all of the other characters have such magnificent character development that makes them all seem so real.  Each of them has their own backstory that gets elaborated on and adds a very human element.  The show does an excellent job at representing a large spectrum of people.  It’s filled with drama but definitely doesn’t lack a good laugh here and there.

Season two is going to be just as good as season one was.  If not, better.  Although a lot of characters were very well fleshed out last season, there are a few that viewers were left wondering about, specifically about how some ended up in the prison.  Some of these characters are Lorna Morello (Yael Stone), Tasha ‘Taystee’ Jefferson (Danielle Brooks) and Poussey (Samira Washington).  We can probably expect to see a few new characters added to the storyline that might stir up a bit of trouble with the current prisoners as well.  There’s no doubt that this season will serve up a huge deal of drama that will probably be quoted and gifed for all the world to see on the internet for a long time.  It consists of 13 episodes and was available to stream at 12:01 a.m. today.
