Basic T-Shirts

There are essential in any wardrobe. A basic white shirt or grey vneck goes well with pretty much any outfit for almost any occasion. But don’t be fooled, you definitely shouldn’t be spending huge bucks on these for the perk of wearing brand names because after all - it’s just a plain shirt. Definitely look at quality because it will be worn numerous times, but you can definitely find them at a good price for $11.80 at Forever 21.

Foundation

Whether you want full coverage or something sheer for summer, finding the right foundation for your skin is crucial. Everyone has a unique skin tone that may be difficult to match. Thankfully Sephora has a color matching system you can do online or in store. Sephora + Pantone Color IQ will find your closest color match and then list all the foundations they have available for you to chose from. For normal to dry skin it’s important to get a foundation that is hydrating and may give a more dewy finish. For normal to oily skin it’s important to get a foundation that is long lasting and may have a more matte finish to keep shininess at bay. It’s worth the money to spend on your skin!

Food Shopping

Although it’s tempting to spend money on junk food to snack on, it adds up. Being a college student who is trying to find a balance between work and school, money can be tight. It’s important to get the most with the dollar when it comes to food shopping and stock up on healthy foods too. Going to Aldi in South Plainfield really helps. Not only can you find the same things you would at ShopRight or any other food store, it’s much cheaper because Aldi doesn’t carry brand name food. The food is great and now you can have a good balance between getting fresh produce and getting some snacks.

Shoes

They can make or break any outfit and they describe a person more than you think. Quality over quantity definitely applies here. Not only are you looking for comfort in shoes, but you want them to last you more than one season of wear. The worst is finding a great pair of boots and then having them fall apart so soon. Don’t feel guilty throwing so more money at a pair knee high or combat boots, chic comfy flats, or those classic 6-inch heels for a special occasion. Aldo, NastyGal, Asos, and DSW are great places for shoes. Even though this is a splurge, never neglect a good sale!

Mascara

You have to know when to splurge on makeup and when to save. Definitely save when it comes to mascara. Maybelline, Covergirl, and L’Oreal have come up with the some of the best formulas and mascara wands out there. A personal favorite is the new Covergirl Bombshell Volume which is double sided. On one end it separates and lengthens, and then the other end thickens to add volume. A holy grail mascara is definitely the Maybelline Falsies Volume Express. It’s formula is more wet which makes it easier to apply than those that dry too fast. Not only does this one make my lashes look fuller, it gives the impression that you’re wearing big beautiful false lashes. These range from $7.99-$11.99 depending on the drugstores or department stores you find them in. It’s much better to save money on these great products because they are very temporary and should be thrown out and repurchased every 2 to 3 months.

Jewelry

Ever find the cutest necklace at Forever 21 and you look at the price tag and you’re like WOW, only $7.89! Then you take it home and put it on and it breaks into 25 pieces? That’s what happens when you buy jewelry made from cheap metal. This happened to me numerous times before I finally got tired of buying cheap jewelry that kept breaking, because that ends up adding up to a whole lot money thrown in the garbage. Most of the time, if not every time, the less you spend on a piece of jewelry the more likely it is to tarnish and end up looking very dirty or rusty as well. In worst cases, it will even stain the area of the skin where you have it on green. Especially if you have sensitive skin, it is very possible to get a rash or have an allergic reaction from cheap pieces of jewelry because of the cheap metals and chemicals used to make it. I found great pieces that have lasted at Aldo, Bloomingdales, and J. Crew.

Bras & Bathing Suit Tops

Here’s the time to splurge. It’s very important to find a bra and bathing suit top that is comfortable and supportive, but also pretty and flattering. Every girl wants to feel good about what she is wearing and the perfect bra or bathing suit top is a great confidence boost. Never feel bad about spending $50+ at Victoria’s Secret or wherever you find your perfect fit. Victoria’s Secret is known for catering to all different body types and sizes. I’ve bought some of the best bathing suit tops here and then paired them with a cheap bottom. It’s the perfect match. As long as you feel good about what you’re wearing, that’s all that counts!

Furniture

Most students in college have temporary living situations in either a dorm or an apartment. It’s best to not spend a fortune on furniture that you’re only using for a few years and may or may not get a little messed up over time. You can check or local thrift stores or garage sales for tables, chairs, desks, or dressers that are inexpensive and can hold you over while away at school. If you want something a tad nicer, but definitely don’t want to spend all your money, check out your nearest Ikea or look at their website. It may be more of a hassle because you have to assemble each piece yourself, but it’s definitely worth it in the end. You can make any space, dorm or apartment, feel like home.

Electronics

TV’s, cell phones, speakers, DVD/Blu-Ray players - it’s all very expensive. So it’s very common to want to spend the least amount and get the brand no one’s ever heard of. With my experience this has been my worst mistake. Almost every time I’ve done this, the electronic has never lasted me very long and always seems to break down. It’s actually better to spend more on a more reliable brand, especially if it means that it comes with a better warranty. It’s important to spend the extra money when purchasing it, in order to prevent spending extra money in repairs or possibly buying a new one altogether. I definitely recommend going to a Best Buy and talking with an associate in the department of your need because they are a lot more knowledgeable about the specifics and can give good recommendations based on what you’re looking for. Best Buy also does price matching, so once you have talked it over and picked out whichever electronic you want, do some research to see if you can find it a little cheaper elsewhere and bring in that price.
